Bars, Books and Politics: This architecturally stunning Beacon Hill neighborhood, located within walking distance of the Park Plaza, was home to literary and political movements as well as some great bars. Come join us on a walking tour of this iconic part of Boston as we explore how the areas rich literary tradition developed alongside longstanding traditions of consuming rum, beer, and cider while at the same time the American Society for the Promotion of Temperance was introducing the concept of “teetotalism” or total abstinence from alcohol. From Louisa May Alcott to Robert Frost and Sylvia Plath—the literary styles of this area’s former residents vary as much as the political movements that led to major societal changes in the United States including the prohibition of alcohol for over a decade. Our tour will include both literary and libation stops and will culminate with a delicious lunch in in Boston’s newest literary and architectural hotspot Beacon Hill Books & Café.
